The newbie, entertaining.
Allow me to introduce you to myself: at 7 a tomboy, at 9 a daredevil, at 13 a nerd, at 17 a know-it-all, at 21 a dreamer, at 25 a mother and throughout that whole time an obsessive learner. I love to learn, explore and ask millions of questions.
The truth is you would be endeared by all my questioning.
No, really. I would be happy to listen to you talk about anything you are interested in. You tell me: soap carving, entomology, beetle fighting, noodling, tree shaping, or bottle digging. It’s all fascinating to me.
It seems I have a serious case of the newbies or what Buddhists call “Shoshin”. It basically means having a beginner’s mind. Remember 17-year-old me? I think that was the year that changed me. I was born in South America and as I was finishing high school, I had the opportunity to be an exchange student in the great state of Texas. That year absolutely changed me.
There was (is) something delightful about being completely out of place, awkward and ignorant. For almost 12 months, everything was difficult and took work and I had to trust people to guide me. There was no being cool and collected. I made a fool of myself too many times to count. And somehow it turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life. You know? Being ok with imperfection is required if you want to be a newbie at heart, along with an open mind and the eagerness to learn.
Anyway, I am still riding that wave. Come hang out with me while I take you along on my discovery-of-everything journey. Y’all get to learn with me or laugh at me.
Either way, you’ll be entertained.
